AAS Annual Scientific Meeting

Conference

International Society of Vascular Health

This year the Australian Atherosclerosis Society will be holding two joint sessions with the International Society of Vascular Health (ISVH) as part of the Annual Scientific Meeting.

ISVH is a cross-sectional Society for arterial evaluation involving cardiology, angiology, endocrinology, diabetes, vascular biology, atherosclerosis, as well as vascular devices and nutrition and related disciplines. The international chair is Professor Roland Asmar (Paris, France). The ISVH differs from other vascular societies in that it has a unique focus on clinical applications.

The objectives of the ISVH are to promote and encourage the development and exchange of scientific information in all aspects of vascular health, including research methods and advances in technology with an overall focus on clinical applications and recommendations for action in the management of vascular health on the national and world wide level. The Australasian Regional Committee of ISVH runs local and national scientific meetings in line with these objectives. Details can be found at www.isvh.net. Members of the Australasian Regional Committee are James Cameron (President), Bronwyn Kingwell, Albert Avolio, Sarah Hope, Stephen Worthley, Gerald Watts and Sophia Zoungas.

The first Australasian regional meeting of ISVH was held in Adelaide from August 6–7, 2008. Among a variety of topics actively debated was “Is there a place for assessing arterial mechanics/function in clinical medicine?” delivered by Prof. Kennedy Cruickshank (Manchester, UK).

The diversity and quality of invited speakers is sure to provide excellent opportunities to increase knowledge and understanding of atherosclerosis.

SCOLAR: The Stroke, Cardiovascular, Obesity, Lipids, and Atherosclerosis Research Training Program

The mission of the SCOLAR program is to provide an advanced, interdisciplinary research training program for basic science and clinical trainees to help them become leaders in the research of lipid metabolism and its relation to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome.  The program currently has two components: 1) a series of lectures given by senior members of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society with the aim of providing advanced lipid and atherosclerosis training to postgraduate students, and 2) an inter-laboratory exchange scheme, whereby postgraduate students are encouraged and supported to visit research laboratories in Australia and overseas with the aim of exchanging research ideas and methodologies.  SCOLAR thus promotes exchange of information and ideas between students and faculty, and promotes collegiality between trainees in the field of lipids and atherosclerosis.

AAS Atherosclerosis Education Program
In 2008, the AAS invited several organisations to join with them to develop the AAS Atherosclerosis Education Program (AEP). This initiative is continuing in 2009 and comprises four activities:

  • The AAS Annual Scientific Meeting
  • SCOLAR
  • A update for General Practitioners
    • 2 hour update focussing on nutrition and lifestyle
  • Masterclasss 2009: Advances in Atherosclerosis and its Management
    • One day meeting (Saturday) for physicians from around Australia
    • Scientific updates, clinical comment and case study workshops

This year the conference venue/accommodation are at the same place.
